  • Headquarters: San Diego
    URL: https://outside.digital

We’re Outside Digital - a nimble crew of builders crafting sharp, data-heavy apps for industries like agtech, robotics, and logistics. We’re on the lookout for a Backend Developer who knows their way around Node.js and Kafka, and loves shipping clean, thoughtful products.

This isn’t a corporate gig - we move fast, talk straight, and expect you to own your work. If you’ve built backend systems for geospatial, fleet, or real-time data apps, you’ll fit right in.

    What you’ll do:

    • Build and scale backend systems that power critical product features and real-world automation

    • Optimize data pipelines to handle high-throughput geospatial + sensor data from vehicles and field devices

    • Improve scalability and reduce latency in distributed, event-driven architectures

    • Develop APIs and services that deliver real-time insights to end-users

    • Monitor performance, hunt down bottlenecks, and keep systems healthy

    • Contribute to the reliability, observability, and maintainability of our backend platform

    What we’re looking for:

2+ years building web or mobile app backends (bonus if it’s in geospatial, IOTT,  transportation, or fleet monitoring).

Comfortable in fast-moving, sometimes ambiguous environments.

    Strong with:

    • Node.js + TypeScript

    • API development

    • MongoDB

    • SQL (ClickHouse)

    • MQTT / Kafka

    • WebSockets

    Bonus points for:

    • NestJS

    • IoT / distributed systems

    • Turf.js

    • Redis

    • Golang / C++ / Python

    A few more things:

    • Remote-first, async-friendly, and no micro-managing

    • You must live within ±4 hours of Pacific Time (PST) – makes collab way smoother

    • We’ll ask for a short test assignment to see how you approach real problems

    How to apply:
